Exercise on “Off” Days
I’ve written about and posted plenty of videos featuring my athletes with autism mastering new exercises, having fun, and succeeding. Anyone familiar with autism knows that not every day is a big red balloon of triumph. This is why I consider Adaptive skills to be the most important when discussing long-term success with fitness and other life skills.
Adaptive skills include not only the motivation to perform an activity, but the persistence and resilience to stay with it despite other circumstances. Life just doesn’t happen in a bubble. In the video below, my athlete Fidele needs a bit of coaxing to perform some squats. For reference, he performed just fine after this particular segment, he just needed a little extra prompting to get moving.
