Time Isn’t the Backdrop of Your Program — It’s a Variable You Have to Coach for the Autism and Neurodivergent populations

Picture this: you’ve programmed 3 sets of squats and 3 sets of band rows for an athlete. Simple. Straightforward. The kind of session that should take twenty minutes on paper.

Except the last two sessions haven’t gone that way. Dysregulated behavior has been showing up more often, and by the time you work through it, the clock runs out before your athlete finishes a single set as written.

So — what do you do with the program now?

Time Feels Theoretical, Until It Isn’t

It’s easy to talk about time in the abstract. Session length, reps per minute, how many exercises “should” fit into an hour. But time isn’t a scheduling detail sitting outside your program design — it’s a factor baked into nearly every decision a coach makes:

  • Which exercises you select
  • How you build in adaptive and behavioral support
  • How and when you program breaks
  • How you account for processing delays

If you’re coaching adaptive athletes — or really, any athlete with a nervous system, which is to say every athlete — time determines how robust or how limited your program actually is. It shapes how much you can reasonably and reliably accomplish in a session, and it’s central to striking the right balance between structure and compassion.

What “Time” Actually Includes

When we say time is a variable, we’re not just talking about the length of the session on the calendar. Time shows up in a program through:

Processing delays — the gap between a cue and a response isn’t wasted time; it’s part of how your athlete works.

Dysregulated behavior — regulation isn’t a detour from the session, it’s part of the session.

Transition time between sets and exercises — moving from one movement pattern to the next takes longer for some athletes than others, and that transition has to be programmed for, not just tolerated.

Break time — recovery isn’t only physiological. It’s cognitive and emotional too.

Number of days available to train — consistency and frequency shape what’s realistic to build toward.

Time available per session — the literal container everything else has to fit inside.

Layer on top of this an athlete’s age and their training age — how long they’ve actually been training — and you start to see why two athletes with the “same” program on paper can have completely different sessions in reality.

Structure and Compassion Aren’t Opposites

Here’s the tension every coach working with adaptive athletes eventually runs into: structure gives athletes predictability, and predictability builds trust. But rigid adherence to a plan — “we have to finish 3 sets of squats today because that’s what’s written” — can work directly against the athlete in front of you.

The goal isn’t to abandon the plan. It’s to build programs flexible enough to absorb the real variables — processing time, regulation, transitions — without falling apart. A program that only works when everything goes perfectly isn’t actually a program. It’s a best-case scenario.

The Macro and the Micro

This is where the “big picture vs. small detail” thinking matters. At the macro level, time affects how you structure a training week, a training block, an athlete’s long-term progression. At the micro level, it affects the ten seconds between rep 2 and rep 3, or the transition from squats to band rows.

Fitness becomes a genuine, sustained practice — not a short-term activity — when both levels are accounted for. You can have the best macro plan in the world, but if you haven’t built in room for the micro realities of processing delays and regulation, the plan won’t survive contact with an actual session.

Three Areas of Ability, One Session

Every session sits at the intersection of three areas of ability:

  1. Physical — what the body can do
  2. Adaptive — how the athlete navigates their environment, transitions, and regulation
  3. Cognitive — how the athlete processes instruction, cues, and feedback

Time interacts with all three simultaneously. A session that only accounts for physical capacity while ignoring adaptive and cognitive load isn’t actually built for the athlete — it’s built for the exercise.

Bringing It Back to the Squats and Rows

So back to our athlete who didn’t finish those 3 sets. The question isn’t “how do we get through the program faster.” It’s “what does this session tell us about how we need to reprogram time itself” — more transition buffer, a built-in regulation break, fewer total sets with more room around each one, or a different measure of session “success” altogether.

That’s not a failure of the program. That’s the program working as intended — responsive to the athlete in front of you, not just the plan on paper.
